a weekend in lightning ridge
to city folk, lightning ridge must seem like the end of the world, some remote outback dot on the map. funny that when youre staying in brewarrina, the ridge becomes a cosmopolitan place of culture, with cafes, a wave pool, people, and some refreshing nipponesque hot springs, pumped from 1km below through boiling hot magma.

brewarrina
on saturday morning we started out from newcastle, our last breath of salty air for some time i think. i drove (yes, it's true, i almost know how) west west west. that night was spent camped under the stars in the warrambungles - it had been too long. sunday was more driving through gulargumbone, walgett and finally to brewarrina. after being told horror stories of this town, we were pleasantly surprised at the peaceful little town just past the middle of nowhere. school on monday morning turned out to be just as pleasant - small classes with smiling kids who amazing seem to be ineterested in learning - a far cry from the classes of 30 animals on the coast. our house goes for a hefty $9.50 a week, and the view out the kitchen window reveals a couple of colourful clothes lines, some beat up old cars, then nothing but the flat, dry outback.
